Motion can preserve context
When an element changes position or a new surface appears, an abrupt cut forces the user to reconstruct the interface. A spatial transition can show that a detail panel emerged from a selected item or that a card expanded into a full view.
Continuity reduces cognitive work. The person does not need to ask where the previous screen went because the transition preserves the relationship between states.
Feedback should match the action
Small actions need small responses. A toggle can slide and change color. A saved document can settle with a quiet confirmation. Larger actions, such as completing an onboarding flow, may deserve a more expressive moment.
The scale of the animation should reflect the importance of the event. When every hover and tap produces a dramatic reaction, the interface loses hierarchy and begins to feel restless.
Timing shapes perceived quality
Fast is not always smooth. An animation can technically run at a high frame rate and still feel abrupt because its duration or easing does not match the distance traveled. Elements moving farther generally need more time, while small feedback should remain immediate.
Good easing gives an interface weight without making it feel slow. Accelerate quickly enough to acknowledge input, then decelerate so the final state is easy to read. Test motion on real devices, not only in design tools.
Respect attention and accessibility
Animation should never block essential information. Scroll-driven effects need enough range to be perceived without forcing the user to wait. Repeated ambient motion should stay subtle, and interfaces should honor reduced-motion preferences.
Accessibility is not a separate polish pass. Motion sensitivity, focus order, keyboard use, and screen-reader state all belong in the interaction design from the beginning.
